Hi everyone,
Happy Sunday! I'm writing to you from Inverness, Scotland. I arrived yesterday, after flying from Milan to Edinburgh, then taking a scenic 3.5-hour ScotRail ride north.
I am here to attend a week-long photography workshop/retreat, which begins tonight. It's organized by one of my favorite podcasts, The Photowalk. I put down my deposit nearly a year ago, so it's exciting to finally be here! I’ve been enjoying the cool temperatures and moist air, which remind me of what it often felt like in San Francisco, my former home of many years.
Yesterday on the train, I worked more on an upcoming piece about a tour of Auschwitz that I took this summer. I feel quite invested in it, and I had hoped to get it out before this trip, but it's not ready yet. So for today, I thought I’d just share a few long-exposure favorites of the Scottish countryside, taken out the train window. I hope you enjoy them!
One last thing: I was really heartened by the warm reception for the piece I published this past Monday about Venice. It's already one of my Top 10 most-read posts ever. Thanks to everyone who took the time to send your feedback!
I’m feeling good about the decision to alternate these new "Visual Love Letters" with my usual personal essay posts. I’m looking forward to the next one, which I believe will either be another location in Italy, or a coastal city in Spain that I visited last year.
I'm not sure how much free time I'll have this week, but if I can, I'll publish the Auschwitz piece before I return to Italy on Saturday. Otherwise, it'll come as soon as it's ready to see the light of day.
Wishing you a peaceful Sunday, wherever in the world you are.1
Michael
I noticed this morning that, according to Substack, I have subscribers in nearly 40 countries, which kind of blows my mind. 🤯
Absolutely gorgeous shots, like amazing watercolours. Enjoy Scotland.
Some of my favorite photos yet. Gorgeous, serene, original, elegant. Do you ever offer high res images for sale?
