Every single word of this resonated deeply. After a batshit year from hell (that is somehow not yet over), I have had to constantly remind myself of most of these things, while also training for the NYC marathon. Everyone keeps asking me how I managed to train this year during all the turmoil and my response has consistently been that it’s the one thing I could control and the one thing that was predictable. I kept saying it would be my last marathon but I’ve already agreed to run it again next year, for the same reasons.
Jess, thank you for this. I am also a person who has to have something(s) that I can "control," so I can definitely relate. Best of luck in the marathon! Keep on keeping on.
Love this and needed to read it today. I have a similar themed post in my drafts that made me feel better just writing it. Giving up alcohol and caffeine helped minorly with anxiety and majorly with depression. So I wholeheartedly endorse that one! Plus most bars in Italy have great decaf! ☕️
Yes, when I first gave up coffee, I quit entirely, but I missed that morning ritual so much, so I started drinking decaf. I know there is a tiny amount of caffeine in decaf as well, but this change has significantly helped my struggles with anxiety, especially when there are specific things in my life that are triggering me. Thanks for your feedback!

My favorite: “Strong trees still sway.”
I got that from a small print I purchased from Woosah Outfitters shortly before moving to Italy.
