In Italy, same-sex couples cannot marry, but they can enter into legally recognized civil unions, which provide similar rights and responsibilities to marriage. These civil unions, established in 2016, offer couples many of the legal protections, benefits, and rights of marriage, though adoption rights and access to in vitro fertilization are excluded.
